Improve soccer performance, confidence on the ball and increase overall skill

Soccer; 3 minute Fitness drill

2 players, 3 futebols;  or 3 players, 4 futebols. (brasilianfutebol.com)

Object – 2 players attempt to juggle 3 futebols at the same time. This may not  considered juggling in the true sense, but the idea is to keep the futebols in the air or at least bouncing; therefore players must keep all balls alive or in motion while attempting to juggle the 3 balls. Try to do this for 2 to 3 minutes.

Tips –  Pick a stationary target to play futebols to. Allow futebols to bounce, in fact playing for the bounce is essential as it buys time allowing players to chase down stray futebols and return them to the target.  The target is essential as trying to pass three futebols to each other in the air is impossible. (if you can do it please send us a video!)

Players will be actively and continuously chasing down a futebol, work to control it with 1 to 2 touches and play it back to the target, then immediately look for another  futebol that has been played to the target by the other player and repeat. Ideally futebols should be passed back to the target with a higher trajectory allowing futebols to bounce several times while limiting the distance that then may bounce away from the target. Goal is to keep the futebols moving or alive.

Soccer Training; Training with a small ball

Soccer Skills Development; Training with a smaller ball to refine focus and achieve confidence on the ball.

Using a smaller ball such as the Brasilian Futebol can be of great benefit if used consistently in training sessions. It’s a tool for any situation including warm-ups, individual training, technical training and small games or game like situations.

The Brasilian Futebol can be plugged into sessions to add focus on touch and control which is essential to every training session. Control is key to developing possession which allows tactics to be employed. Emphasizing first touch is an essential element to control/possession and should be emphasized in every drill regarding ball control and passing.

Training does not have to be so regimented as to take the fun out of play. Jugging can be of great benefit to skills development as an individual, in pairs or in groups and is a fun way to train given a little attention and some instruction. Set short term goals and be consistent with testing and challenging new levels. Players can juggle at home and will find it an enjoyable part of their training.

Soccer: Juggling for touch and game play

Juggling for touch.

Three players are required.

Two players set themselves 25 to 30 yards apart. Third players stands between them.

The ball starts with one of the outside players (A) and is played into the middle player (X) who plays it back to (A). (A) plays the ball to the other outside player (B) who toches it to (X). (X) plays it back to (B) and (B) plays the ball to (A). A to X to A < to> B to X to B< to> A etc etc. It is a nice little short-short-long-short-short long…..

Turn this into a semi juggling exercise where the players attempt to play the ball in the air and trap/receive the ball before it bounces or after 1 or 2 bounces. Use one to three touches to control the ball and execute a good pass.

Work on passing the ball with proper pace, good direction (hitting the target chosen) and apply a reasonable trajectory, meaning don’t just kick the ball in the air and hope it gets there.

Eventually players will be able to execute this drill using just 1 touch, two touches when necessary. And eventually it would be ideal to minimize the bounces and possibly eliminate the bounce.

Different twist. A plays to X,  X turns the ball (with 1 to 3 touches) and plays to B.  B plays to X,  X turns the ball and plays to A.

Excellent for touch and developing passing and receiving. Really focuses on the first touch as players must control the ball in their space and use the first touch to set up the second which could be/should be a pass.
