Chelsea’s Juan Mata was the EPL’s standout player in 2012-13

Juan Mata

Chelsea’s Juan Mata was the EPL’s standout player in 2012-13; creativity allied with strength, brilliance and consistency.

Midfielder:  Chelsea

Juan Mata, the latest in the Spanish assembly line of MadSkliz midfielders, led the league with 12 assists.

Mata pinged his passes all over the field, often surprising his own teammates.  Few players have so swiftly adapted to the EPL and then continued to improve.

Short and slight, the Spaniard seems at ease amid the physical mayhem, while his ability to not only create goals but score them too (he had 20 in all competitions) justifies his Chelsea nickname “Johnny Kills” (yes, it’s the English translation of his name but you gotta admit that it fits).

Flanked by Eden Hazard and Oscar, Chelsea’s passing carousel is the most beautiful to watch outside of Barcelona.

Borussia  and Bayern won’t have to wait for the Champions League final to go head to head.      Dortmund hosts Bayern on Saturday in the Bundesliga in a preview of their Wembley showdown,  Bayern wrapped up the title with six games to spare and Dortmund is all but assured of second place — although both clubs are keen to strike a psychological blow before their meeting in Europe’s showpiece on May 25.

Our Competition is the World

Our competition is the world - Stan Baker

Our competition is the world - Stan Baker

This is a good read. It draws from soccer standouts like Claudio Reyna and Dr. Javier Perez focusing
mainly on the 11-14 age groups and touches on topics such as philosophy of coaching, winning now vs long term development, appropriate age level progressions, better understanding our players, maximizing potential, how talent is developed, creativity, the training session, style of
play, and training outside the regular practice sessions.

Well worth the time. Give it a go.

Despite being the most successful team at the European level in recent history, having qualified for six consecutive semi-finals and lifted the title three times in the last seven years, football experts around the world seem to agree that Barcelona are not favourites to beat Bayern Munich and qualify for the final round of the competition.

The U.S. women’s national team secured its ninth Algarve Cup title with a 2-0 win over Germany in the final on Wednesday in Faro, Portugal.

Alex Morgan scored both goals for the U.S., with the first in the 13th minute and second in the 34th. The two strikes were her 40th and 41st career international goals, making her one of 12 U.S. women to score 40 or more international goals.

Megan Rapinoe, who was a late scratch from Wednesday’s lineup due to an injury suffered in warm ups, was named the player of the tournament.

This was the first trophy the U.S. has won under new head coach Tom Sermanni.
